Preparatory Strings is a string ensemble that performs classical, popular and folk music. Preparatory Strings musicians must be able to read and count simple rhythms and play in a steady tempo. Listening and ensemble skills are stressed, providing a sound foundation for future playing.

Meet the Conductor
Mrs. Kersten studied violin at California State University, Sacramento, the University of Oregon, and is the founding director of the San Luis Obispo Youth Symphony Academy String Orchestra (1979) and Preparatory Strings (1991). She studied violin pedagogy with Dr. Shinichi Suzuki in Japan and is an active teacher and performer. Mrs. Kersten performs with the San Luis Obispo Symphony and several chamber ensembles. She has held permanent positions with the Sacramento Symphony, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, and the Eugene (Oregon) Symphony, including the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival Orchestra for many years. In 2012, Mrs. Kersten was awarded the Distinguished Service Award to Community by the American String Teachers Association.

YS Winter Concert
Youth Symphony Winter Concert will be taking place on Monday, December 9, 2019 at New Life Community Church in Pismo Beach. The concert begins at 6 PM and doors open at 5:30 PM. Tickets are now available for purchase.
