Academy String Orchestra

Academy String Orchestra is an intermediate ensemble that plays music from Baroque through Modern periods. ASO may occasionally perform with the Symphonic Winds as a full orchestra.

Students participating in Academy String Orchestra must have ensemble experience, musical style, and expression, along with experience in vibrato, shifting, and playing in various positions.

Meet the Conductor

Tanya Pyle Streder grew up in San Jose, California, in a house packed full of musicians. Starting her violin studies at the age of 3, she went on to study music at Cal State University San Jose and Biola University, and played in a touring orchestra for several years. After a career in graphic design and raising three children, Tanya picked up her violin again after moving to San Luis Obispo with her husband in 1992.

She has been a member of the San Luis Obispo Symphony since 1995, and also plays with the Santa Maria Philharmonic, Orchestra Novo, Lompoc Pops, and many other performing groups. Tanya is a founding member of the Mariposa Quartet and spends much of her time arranging music for them, as well as maintaining a full schedule of violin and viola students.  She was a strings coach with the Youth Symphony for many years and is very happy to be returning to work with the Academy Orchestra.
