The Christ Child Market, Christkindmarkt in German, is a tradition that dates back to the 1200's in Eastern Europe. Celebrated in the anticipation of the Messiah coming, the Christmas Market is traditionally held in the town square where food, drink and seasonal items are sold in the open air. Traditional singing, dancing and items such as nutcrackers, candied and toasted almonds, Christmas cookies, gingerbread, bratwurst and mulled wine are sold. The oldest Christmas Market is said to have started in Vienna, Austria in 1298 as a forerunner to German markets in Munich (1310), Bautzen (1384), Frankfurt (1393) and Dresden (1434). Each year these markets attract millions of visitors.
